Zhongshan District Features

Features

The district features many recreational areas, including Rongxing Garden, Xinsheng Park, Zhongshan Fine Arts Park, Dajia Riverside Park, and others . There is also a Martyrs' Shrine dedicated to those who died fighting trying to turn China into a republic and a Fine Arts Museum. Another major tourist attraction is the Xingtian (Singtian) Temple, which is dedicated to Guan Gong, the God of War.

History

During the Qing Dynasty, there were only four villages (Shangpitou, Xiapitou, Zhoucuolun, and Xinzhuangzai) in this district.

Under the Japanese rule, "Meiwufu" was the best hotel in Taipei. It was located near Section 1, Zhongshan N. Rd. and Taipei Railway Station. The father of our nation, Dr. Sun Yat-sen, always stayed in this hotel when he came to Taiwan. After Taiwan's Retrocession, it became "Dr. Sun Yat-sen Memorial House".

In memory of Dr. Sun Yat-sen's great achievement of establishing the Republic of China, the government combined the six districts (Dazheng, Yucheng, Zhongyuang, Gonggian, Dagong, and Xiapitou) during Japanese rule into one, and named it Zhongshan District.

Bussiness & Industries

Zhongshan District is home to the headquarters of Tatung Company and Uni Air.

On a historical note, Zhongshan North Road, which crosses the district, was often used by Chiang Kai-Shek to get to his home in Shilin. All traffic was stopped when this occurred as everybody had to salute the leader. Military police during martial law often lined the street as this road was used by numerous political and military leaders, some of  whom stayed at the Grand Hotel in Yuanshan.

Zhongshan Road, along with Zhongxiao Road (which runs west to east), denote the compass directions of roads in Taipei City. For instance, when Zhongshan South Road intersects with Zhongxiao Road, it becomes Zhongshan North Road. Similarly, when Zhongxiao West Road intersects with Zhongshan Road, it becomes Zhongxiao East Road. This methodology can be applied for most roads in Taipei City.
